Emergency Closures and Information

Parents and guardians may update contact information and preferences in Campus Portal to receive the most
current information about emergency closings.

Unless D219 sends an announcement through the school notification system, schools will be open and will operate on a normal school day schedule, including Late-Start Wednesdays.

School Closing and Late Start Information

Note: If school is closed due to severe weather conditions or a building emergency, there will be no athletic practices, competitions, or other extracurricular activities.

Emergency E-Learning Day

It is a priority to keep D219 buildings open; however, there may be times when we need to move to the Emergency E-Learning Plan for asynchronous learning. In the case of severe weather, the Superintendent will make a decision on behalf of the district by 5:30 am the morning of, or in some cases, the night before about whether D219 is moving to the Emergency E-Learning Plan.

Emergency Closing: No E-Learning Day

If school is closed for any reason without moving to our Emergency E-Learning Plan, D219 will use emergency days at the end of the school year so that we meet the required number of school attendance days per year.

Two-Hour Late Arrivals

A two-hour late arrival allows additional time for roads and sidewalks to be cleared, or for the temperature to rise to a safer level. In this case, school will operate on a two-hour late arrival schedule. School buses will begin picking students up two hours later than usual. Regular and Early Bird classes will begin two hours later than usual.

Emergency information is available in the following ways:

  • District Website: niles219.org
  • Emergency Notification System:  An automated message via phone, text and/or email
  • Social Media @NTHSD219:
    Facebook and Instagram

Local television and radio outlets also share weather-related school closings through the Emergency Closing Center.

School Closings Due to Weather

When making decisions about weather-related schedule changes, D219 balances student safety and student educational needs. We consider several factors, including local road conditions, the safe functioning of our school buses and buildings, and discussions with our sender elementary schools.

If a parent or guardian determines that it is not safe or possible to send their student to school, please call the school’s Attendance Office or the Absence Reporting Line to report the student’s excused absence.
