Born in Stockton, California to a migrant farming family from Mexico, Hernández dreamed of flying in space ever since he heard the first Hispanic-American was chosen to travel into space in 1980. Hernández earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of the Pacific and his master's degree in electrical & computer engineering from the University of California in Santa Barbara. In 1987, he began working with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory until 2001, when he joined the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. In 2004, he was accepted into NASA’s astronaut training program.
