Yohanna Endashaw, a senior at Niles West High School, received a state proclamation in honor of her achievement as the Illinois Poetry Out Loud champion for 2024. State Rep. Kevin Olickal and State Sen. Ram Villivalam presented the proclamation to the student on August 28 at Niles West. The government officials were joined by Endashaw’s family and District 219 Superintendent Thomas Moore, along with other administrators and staff.
“It’s incredible to see such a commitment to arts and poetry, especially during trying times. We look to these works to give us comfort and inspiration,” Rep. Olickal said to Endashaw. “You did an excellent job and you should be very proud of all of your achievements.”
The Illinois General Assembly’s formal congratulations on the student’s award-winning performance in the spring also acknowledged her accomplishment as a two-time state winner.
