Niles North Teacher Selected for African American Educator Award

Elizabeth (Liz) Brent, a Niles North teacher in the Fine and Applied Arts Department received the African American Educator Award from Second Baptist Church in Evanston on February 8, 2026. The award recognizes African American educators who have made outstanding contributions to public elementary and secondary education in the North Shore.
 
Brent was selected among nominees who have actively collaborated with the professional learning community, parents and families, inspiring students with diverse backgrounds and varied learning styles. Honorees also earn the respect and admiration of students, parents and colleagues, playing an active and purposeful role in the local and school communities.

“Liz is both a skilled and passionate teacher who brings out the creative spirit in her students,” noted Roszena Haskins, D219 Deputy Superintendent. “ As our nation and our school community celebrate the 100th anniversary of Black History Month, we are so proud that Liz is widely acknowledged for her contributions to District 219.”

Rev. Dr. Michael C. R. Nabors, Senior Pastor of Second Baptist Church, noted the longstanding history of the contributions of Black people to educational excellence and success, sharing  “appreciation and respect for African American educators in the North Shore who continue in this grand tradition.”
