Niles North Students Attempt to Break World Record

A group of Niles North students designed and coded a large-scale version of the video game Pong and with guidance from their computer science teacher, David Ruth, hope to break a Guinness World Record for the most people playing a single game of Pong simultaneously. Ruth and his students coordinated an event in the school gym on January 9.

During the event, approximately 500 students participated in the game, all playing together on the large screen during a class period. The computer science students worked for more than a year as part of an advanced app development course, writing the code from scratch and building a system using colored paper and cameras to control paddles on a large screen.

Students collaborated to test the system, troubleshoot issues, and make adjustments to ensure the game ran smoothly. Results will be announced later this year.
