District 219 named four assistant principals at Niles North High School for the 2025-26 school year. The Niles Township High School Board of Education approved the appointments at their April 7, 2025 meeting.
This school year, D219 began taking steps to transform its organizational structure to effectively use resources and best address the needs of students. This model aligns with student-centered goals that promote a positive learning environment and support data-driven outcomes. The following assistant principals will begin their roles at Niles North on July 1, 2025.
Catherine (Katie) Kannokada
With nearly two decades of experience in education, Katie Kannokada has dedicated the past 12 years to Niles North as a math teacher, AVID elective teacher, and AVID Coordinator. She previously taught math at Nichols Middle School in Evanston and has also worked as an AVID Staff Developer, training educators nationwide in best instructional practices. As the AVID Coordinator, she has led a team of teachers, counselors, and administrators to expand student opportunities for college and career success. Committed to equity-driven leadership, she believes collaboration and strong relationships can foster an inclusive, supportive school culture.
Katie holds a B.S. in Mathematics Education from Indiana University, an M.Ed. in Instructional Leadership in Policy Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and an M.A. in Educational Leadership from Concordia University Chicago.
Outside of work, she cherishes quality time with her family and friends, including her husband, daughter, son, and puppy. Whether gardening, traveling, enjoying live music, reading, or cheering on women’s collegiate sports, she values meaningful experiences that deepen her connection with others. She is thrilled to step into this new leadership role and continue serving the students, staff, and greater Niles North community.
Kosta Kougias
Kosta Kougias is an experienced educator and leader with 20 years of dedication to student success. After serving as a Dean of Students for 13 years (six at Niles North), he will step into his new role of Assistant Principal for the 2025-2026 school year at Niles North.
Kosta previously taught Social Studies at Adlai E. Stevenson and Grayslake Central High Schools before accepting his current role as Dean of Students. He also has a background in coaching basketball for 15 years at every high school level. His background brings a wealth of experience in leadership, student engagement, and academic development.
Kosta earned a Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in Secondary Education from Roosevelt University and holds Masters in School Leadership and Special Education from Concordia University.
Kosta enjoys spending time with his wife and their daughter and son, along with their two dogs. The majority of that time is spent being a proud husband and dad intermingled with an occasional round of golf.
Kosta is committed to creating a positive and supportive environment for students and staff alike and excited for his new role.
Matthew Krueger
Since the 2024-2025 school year, Matthew Krueger has had the privilege of serving the Niles North community as a Dean of Students, a role that has allowed him to deeply engage with students, staff, and families. Throughout this year, he has focused on building authentic relationships, understanding the unique needs of individuals, and fostering an inclusive environment. His unwavering dedication and passion for supporting and inspiring Niles North students is at the core of his motivation to create a positive, enriching educational experience for all.
With over 13 years of experience in education, Matthew brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his role at Niles North. Before joining the school, he served the Washington Elementary School community within the Evanston-Skokie School District 65 as a third-grade teacher in a co-taught, inclusive classroom. His career also includes impactful teaching experiences at Oakton Elementary School in Evanston, where he further honed his skills in classroom instruction and community engagement.
Matthew is deeply committed to building authentic relationships with all stakeholders. His work spans a variety of areas, including culture and climate initiatives, restorative practices, the analysis and improvement of Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS), and instructional leadership. His philosophy centers on “loving accountability,” where he believes that both students and staff can emerge as their very best versions when supported with care, respect, and consistent guidance.
Matthew holds a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with endorsements in Language Arts, Mathematics, and Middle School Education from Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. He also earned his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, including a Principal Endorsement, from the same institution. These credentials, along with his extensive experience, have equipped him to provide exceptional leadership in the educational community.
Beyond his professional achievements, Matthew is a devoted husband and father. He cherishes spending time with his wife and their two children. Together, they enjoy coaching and supporting their children in various sports and activities, traveling to new places, going on family walks, staying active, and cooking meals together. Matthew finds joy in meeting new people, learning about their stories, and connecting with others on a personal level.
Looking ahead, Matthew is excited to expand his role as an Assistant Principal and continue his work in supporting the students, staff, and families of the Niles North community. He remains committed to making a lasting impact on the school’s culture, climate, and academic success.
Dianna Yu
Dianna Yu has been the Science Director at Niles North for the past seven years, bringing extensive experience in science education and curriculum leadership. Before joining Niles North, she worked as a Program Coordinator and Science Teacher, where she designed and implemented innovative instructional programs.
Passionate about inquiry-based learning and student engagement, Dianna is committed to supporting teachers and creating meaningful learning experiences for all students. She is excited to take on this new role and collaborate with staff and students in new ways.
Outside of work, Dianna enjoys discovering great restaurants, going for walks, traveling, and spending time with her son.
