Transition Process and Resources

Transitioning to high school is an exciting time, and for parents of incoming 9th graders receiving special education services, understanding the articulation process is key.

Articulation Process

This process is a collaborative effort between the high school and middle school special education teams, designed to ensure a smooth and supportive transition for your child.

What Happens:

The core of the articulation process involves a thorough review of your student's most recent evaluation, their current Individualized Education Program (IEP), and all available school data. Based on this comprehensive information, the teams will work together to determine the most appropriate academic courses and any necessary related services your child will need at the high school level. All of these crucial decisions are finalized in partnership with you, the parents, at a dedicated articulation meeting. These meetings typically take place in late fall at the high school, providing ample time for planning.

Who is Involved:

The articulation meeting brings together a comprehensive team to best support your student. This includes you, the parents, special education representatives from both the high school and middle school, the school counselor, and, when appropriate, relevant related service providers (such as speech-language pathologists or occupational therapists). Students' participation is essential for this important discussion about their future.

How to Prepare:

To make the most of your student's articulation meeting, it's highly beneficial to come prepared. First, be thoroughly familiar with your student's current IEP. This document outlines their present levels of performance, goals, and accommodations, which are central to the discussion. Second, take some time to review the high school's coursebook and explore the various career pathways available. This will allow you to thoughtfully contribute to discussions about your child's course of study and elective opportunities. Finally, begin to identify any extracurricular activities or athletic opportunities at the high school that your student might be interested in. Considering these interests alongside academic courses will help in balancing student life and ensuring a well-rounded high school experience. This will also help the high school determine any necessary supports needed for students to access the vast experiences in D219.
