German Students Earn 5 Trophies at Contest
District 219 German students who participated in the 2010 German Day High School competition brought home trophies in five out of six categories. About 200 students from 14 schools attended the yearly contest held on February 24 at the University of Illinois, Chicago.
Winning awards: Niles West students Morgan Gstalter and Danielle Cicio earned first place in City Guide with their report about Heidelberg. Niles West student Vikram Shah earned second place in Spelling Bee. Niles West students Ned McElfresh and Eric Ronning placed second with their infomercial about the imaginary “Mezzo-Mixer.” Niles North students Annemarie Reid and Tina Tillman took third place for their commercial for the “Zwergenfänger 2000,” a contraption to capture pesky garden gnomes. Niles North and Niles West tied for third place in the student-written Skit category. The winning teams included: Niles North students Leslie Vail, Anya Toledo, Isaac Park, Mia Trais, Nitesh Patel and Dawid Szmigielski “The Murder of King Ludwig” and Niles West students Katarina Sostaric, Daniel Friedman, Ned McElfresh, Danya Snowsky, Harry Behm and Paul Choe for “Love through the (Berlin) Wall.” Niles West student Daniel Friedman earned a third place award in the Culture essay category with his report about Hans Asperger, the scientist and research who identified Asperger syndrome.
